6R140 Transmission Ford's 6R140 replaced the 5R110W transmission in the diesel-powered Super Duty and was commonly referenced as Ford's "clean sheet" transmission design. The 6R140 is manufactured in the United States and comes loaded with heavy-duty features that include a "Live Drive" power take-off, low-speed torque converter lockup, a high capacity filtering system, double overdrive speeds, and a solid 1 piece casing. Drivers are able to put the truck into "M" mode using the SelectShift manual shift mode to manually shift throughout all 6 gears with two buttons on the shift lever with "+" and "-" labels. In poor weather conditions or with high load driving conditions this feature can be particularly beneficial. Additionally, the driver is able to lug the 6.7L Power Stroke down to 900 rpm with the use of the low-speed TC lockup. The Ford 6R140 transmission can be found installed in trucks with a GCWR of up to 50K pounds.

The 6R140 transmission is the only transmission that is available for Ford trucks with the 6.7L Power Stroke Turbodiesel engine, as a manual transmission has never been made available as an option. The 6R140 transmission benefits from relatively longer service intervals in great part due to the feature of a patented dual media transmission filter. Available torque is maximized as the 6R140 offers gear spread with a low 1st gear. Additionally, the 6R140 has a relatively high overdrive ratio that minimizes engine rotations per minute (rpm)resulting in better fuel economy during cruising speeds.
