518 TransmissionAlso referred to as the 46RH transmission, the 518 transmission was used as a replacement for the 727 transmission by Chrysler in the 1990s. The heavier-duty relative of the 500 transmission, the 518 was normally found being used by V6 engines. The conversion to the 727 was a relatively easy one as the two models share quite a few similarities and were an economical alternative to the conversion of a rear-end or manual five-speed transmission. The 518 transmission's overdrive ratio of .069:1 enables a savings of up to 30% in gas mileage on the highway while reducing engine wear and tear due to the fact that it turns 600 fewer rotations per minute during overdrive.
