    5R55E Transmission
Comparably similar to the 4-speed 4R55E transmission, the 5R55E transmission as an entirely new breed of automatic transmissions that were controlled electronically and offered an additional forward gear. The 5R55E was the very first automatic 5-speed transmission used by an automaker in the United States. The 5R55E offered more precision when it came to the computer controls required to accommodate the additional forward gear in addition to introducing a more advanced friction-to-friction shifting ability.

Other variations of the 5R55E began appearing after the original "E" series was introduced for the 1997 model year. And while variations of the 5R55E were quite similar to one another in design, they offered differences that included specialized controls, gear ratios, or other components relative to the needs of specific applications the transmission was intended for. The 55RN was the first variant of the "E" series, appearing first in the S-Type Jaguar, Lincoln LS luxury sedans, followed later by the Ford Thunderbird in 2002. In 2003 the Thunderbird switched to the 5R55S transmission offering the featured SelectShift by Ford. The SelectShift enabled operators to mimic the practice of shifting similar to a manual transmission but without the clutch. The 5R55S was used in 2005 through 20120 Ford Mustangs without the SelectShift feature.

The 5R55W transmission was used in both the Ford Ranger and Explorer during the period of November 13th, 2000 through March of 2002 (Explorer) and 2011 (Ranger). The most specific variation between the wide shift 5R55W and the synchronic shift 5R55S transmission models was the different planet gear ratio. The 2008 Ford FG Falcon's entry-level models 2008 were the newest vehicles to have the 5R55.
