    4R70W Transmission
Originally introduced in 1993 by Ford, the 4R70W automatic transmission was derived from the electronic version of Ford's AOD transmission - the AODE - in 1980. As was the situation with many automotive manufacturers in 1993, the Ford Motor Company started using a new naming convention for its transmissions. Many in the automotive industry would argue that the new naming practice was both more favorable and descriptive to previous lesser meaningful names. The 4R70E/W has a nominal maximum input torque of 700 Newton-meters (N-m), which equates to roughly 516 lb-ft. Prior to being replaced by the slightly stronger 4R75E transmission, the unit was used in the F-150 up until the 2005 model.

For both the 2004 and 2005 model years, the 4R70W/E was exclusive for models with 4.2L V-6 and 4.6L V-8 engines and the 4R75E was used for vehicles with the 5.4L V-8 engine. This coincided with the newly introduced 5.4L 3 valve engine that was much more powerful than its predecessor. The timing can only perhaps imply it was intended to complement the performance of the engine. With the consideration that the AOD transmission that was first introduced in 1980, the transmission platform sustained a relatively long service life for the F-150 and other applications.
